The Goomba Trade is advanced technique that allows you to trade green and red shells for mushrooms. It is very popular among experienced players, since it allows players positioned first to get mushrooms and therefore advancing even further.

Background
The Goomba Trade makes use of mushroom like nature of Goombas. When hit, Goombas will transmute into mushrooms storing their vital energy in it. This energy is then used to accelerate the driver when triggered. The transmutation can only succeed if the Goomba is hit by a green or red shell.
Use
To perform a Goomba Trade you need to hold at least one green or red shell and of course there have to be Goombas on the race track. Simply hit a Goomba with a shell (this can prove to be quite difficult with a red shell, since it only follows the initial direction for a short time before the "autopilot" takes over) and try to pick up the transmuted mushroom. This technique is extremely useful for players in higher positions, since they will receive lots of shells and might end up with spare ones they don't need for protection.

Ongoing Research
We suspect the crates in Toad's Factory tho show similar behavior, although you have the possibility to smash them without item by just hitting them with your cart. This won't grant you a mushroom, so we are not quite sure jet, how they interact with shells. It could be, that they act like the piles of leaves on Maple Treeway, yielding randomly either a banana or mushroom when destroyed. Of course we will keep you posted as soon as we can confirm this.
