If you are ahead in the race, you will often get triple bananas, in second and third place triple green shells and sometimes even triple red shells. You won't just throw them around, you will activate them but keep them as protection and make room for collecting another item. This may seem obvious and you won't think about it anymore. But there is something less obvious that you might want to consider...
While you are carrying either triple bananas, triple red or green shells, you will never get another triple item. So if you think you can afford to lose your protection for a moment, I would recommend you to drop your valuable triple before collecting a new item. This way, you increase the chance of your next item being a better one.
